Trump Jr.'s Firm Bought In. Three Months Later, the Pentagon Paid Out.
House Democrats say Donald Trump Jr.'s venture firm took equity in a rare-earth startup months before it got the Pentagon's biggest-ever capital loan, with no review of the conflict.

under investigation Preponderance of reporting — not a findingDonald Trump Jr. is a named partner at 1789 Capital, a venture capital firm that bought equity in a rare-earth startup called Vulcan Elements in August 2025. Three months later, the Trump administration funneled over $670 million taxpayer dollars into that same company, the largest loan the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital has ever issued [S3].
The Case Against Donald Trump Jr.
In August 2025, 1789 Capital purchased an equity stake in Vulcan Elements as part of a $65 million fundraising round [S3]. Trump Jr. told the Financial Times he was "very involved in the strategic decisions regarding where to invest our resources" at the firm [S3]. Three months after that investment, the Trump administration committed $620 million in federal loans and another $50 million in equity to Vulcan Elements, without competitive procurement and without the independent technical review normally required to verify a mineral project's viability before public money moves [S3]. That review requirement was waived under President Trump's own executive order on minerals, EO 14241 [S3]. The $620 million loan was worth more than twice Vulcan's entire valuation at the time [S3]. No public record exists of any conflict-of-interest review, recusal, or financial disclosure tied to Trump Jr.'s stake [S3]. He isn't an isolated beneficiary either: at least four companies in 1789 Capital's portfolio received federal contracts or awards from the Trump administration in 2025, totaling more than $735 million [S3]. When House Natural Resources Democrats tried to put Trump Jr. under oath about it, Republicans on the committee voted to block the subpoena [S3].
PUBLIC OPINION
Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman asked the question directly at the hearing: "Should the American people be concerned that the President's son has a financial stake in a company that just received this huge windfall from the Pentagon?" [S3]. Subcommittee Ranking Member Maxine Dexter said Trump Jr. "must be made to answer whether the president's son illegally profited from his father's presidency" [S3]. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has said that a president enriching his family through public office is "abuse of the highest order" [S3]. Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith has said "no one should be shielded from legal scrutiny based on their last name" [S3]. Natural Resources Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Paul Gosar has said the president should be held accountable "for abusing public office for his family's financial gain" [S3]. Those were all statements Republicans made about the Bidens. When the committee moved to apply that same standard to Trump Jr., Republicans on the committee voted to block the subpoena [S3].
BULLSHIT DEFENSE
No response from Donald Trump Jr. or his lawyer addressing the self-dealing allegation appears in the sources. The closest thing on record is his own statement to the Financial Times that he was "very involved in the strategic decisions regarding where to invest our resources" at 1789 Capital [S3], which confirms his role rather than denies it. The administration has not responded to a February 2 letter from Ranking Members Huffman, Garcia, and Heinrich demanding documents and a briefing on equity deals across the critical minerals program [S3].
The money moved on a three-month clock nobody at the Pentagon seems to have questioned, through a review process the president's own order had already hollowed out. Nobody has to explain the timing, because the people with subpoena power voted not to make them.
