Marvin Pendarvis, a former South Carolina lawmaker and attorney, pleaded guilty Wednesday to nine fraud-related charges tied to a scheme that prosecutors say stole settlement money from his own clients [S1]. This isn't a guy accused of cutting corners on paperwork. This is a lawyer who prosecutors say took money meant for people burying a spouse or recovering from a ventilator, and moved it into his own pocket [S1].

The Case Against Marvin Pendarvis

Pendarvis changed his plea from not guilty to guilty pursuant to a plea agreement covering nine of his original 10 counts, including four counts of wire fraud, three counts of aggravated identity theft and two counts of money laundering [S1]. He was indicted in November after prosecutors alleged he orchestrated a scheme to defraud multiple clients by negotiating and receiving civil settlement payouts without their knowledge or approval, on at least four occasions [S1]. He's also accused of forging clients' signatures on settlement release forms [S1]. Prosecutors said there were 34 total victims total and more than $800,000 stolen between January 2022 and November 2024, though only four instances made it into the plea agreement [S1]. He pleaded guilty to counts one through nine [S1]. The wire fraud and money laundering counts carry a maximum of 20 years each, aggravated identity theft carries a mandatory minimum of two years per count, and the fines run up to $250,000 per count on wire fraud and identity theft and $500,000 or double the laundered amount on the laundering counts [S1]. He also partially waived his right to contest or appeal his sentencing [S1]. Sentencing is expected within the next three to four months [S1].

PUBLIC OPINION

Bryan Stirling, the U.S. attorney for the District of South Carolina, said Pendarvis "took advantage of these folks at their worst moment," listing the death of a wife, a victim on a ventilator, and two separate accident injuries, one involving a child, as the circumstances Pendarvis allegedly exploited "to move money around" [S1]. Stirling also said his office "were fully prepared to go forward with trial, but this is where we are today," and called the plea "the first step in a process," adding, "We're happy with where we are today. We're happy with the results" [S1].

BULLSHIT DEFENSE

No response from Pendarvis or an attorney representing him appears in the available reporting [S1].

A lawyer is supposed to be the person standing between a grieving widow or an injured kid's family and a system that chews people up. Pendarvis took that position and used it to forge their names and take their settlement checks. He pleaded guilty. That part isn't in dispute anymore.

P.S. Sentencing is still months out, and the maximum penalties on paper (20 years on the top counts) rarely match what actually gets handed down. Watch what Judge Gergel does with it [S1].
